About
2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines
is a reserve battalion located throughout California,
Nevada, and Utah. It's mission is to provide trained
combat support personnel to reinforce the active component in time
of war, or at times of national emergency. Activated on September
12th, 2001, 2/23 served as a
Quick Reaction Force (QRF) to
protect the nation from additional terrorist attacks. Just before
its one year deactivation date, the battalion's active duty status
was extended in order for the unit to deploy to the Middle East in
participation of
Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).
2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines was the first complete reserve battalion
to deploy in support of OIF I. As well as serving in OIF I, H&S
Company served in the Gulf War, Vietnam and World War II.
2/23 is made up of five company's that are located throughout the
Western United States, consisting of approximately 1,500 Marines and
Sailors. All five company's fall under the command of the 23rd
Marine Regiment and the 4th Marine Division.
